Biomethane

Biomethane is purified raw biogas from anaerobic digestion that can be used as a natural gas substitute.  Water, CO₂, and other impurities are removed during biomethane refining, leaving a high-caloric and pure gas.

It can be used for all natural-gas-end-user applications (heating and cooling, power, transport, etc.).  For transport purposes, it is used as a biofuel in the form of a compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquid natural gas (LNG) substitute.

Biomethane as a substitute for fossil fuels in transport is highly preferred because it is defined as a green source of energy for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Biomethane can be liquefied in heavy-duty transport and marine applications, which are difficult sectors to electrify.

Pannonia Bio Gas plans to implement several innovations for purifying its Pomurska-produced biogas into biomethane.

The deployment of biomethane to replace fossil fuels does not require the investment of additional resources to develop new infrastructure. The existing gas infrastructure is biomethane-ready. This is key to ramping up decarbonisation and providing affordable renewable energy for consumers.

In addition, biomethane can be easily stored and produced at a constant pace, helping balance energy supply from intermittent energy sources of renewable origin, such as solar or wind. It can also be traded and produced within Europe, ensuring the EU’s security of supply, and avoiding dependence on external providers.
